Coming into: Mental Health and Stigma

University of Nebraska - Omaha

What if the spaces we usually walk past held stories we needed to hear?

Coming into: Mental Health and Stigma is a photographic exhibition by Peter Szto, blending documentary photography with social work to explore the lived experience of mental illness in urban China and Council Bluffs, IA. Shot in and around psychiatric hospitals, the images are quiet, powerful invitations to witness—without judgment—the human side of mental health.

How does simply seeing someone—truly seeing them—begin to break the stigma wide open?

Exhibit designed and curated by: Dr. Peter Szto, Grace Abbott School of Social Work, University of Nebraska - Omaha, pszto@unomaha.edu

Launched: 2019

Recent location: Council Bluffs, IA and Canton, China, and online
